Serenity of the Elements

By Gessy Rubio

This design draws inspiration from the pre-Socratic Greek philosopher Empedocles, who posited that all things are composed of four elements: "Hear first the four roots of all things: shining Zeus (fire), life-bringing Hera (air), Aidoneus (earth), and Nestis (water), who with her tears gives moisture to the source of mortals" (Aetius Opinions 1.3.20). Building on this elemental framework, my design also incorporates the concepts of light and darkness.

Final Chess Board Installation

This innovative chess board combines traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology. The board features a sturdy wooden base and a metal sheet surface, finished with heat-protectant white spray paint for durability. Each chess piece is 3D printed from thermal reactive filament, allowing them to change color as they are heated by the thermal patch located beneath the metal sheet. Illuminated by integrated LEDs, the board can be played in the dark, adding a captivating visual element to each match. As the game progresses, the dynamic color shifts of the pieces enhance the strategic experience, creating a truly immersive and interactive game of chess.
